From where Dagrith lay in bed he could see the house that held their purification chamber.

The sight brought a quiet sense of satisfaction to him. Thanks to him, sorcery was all but extinct in 198

Oleppo. It had taken seven years, but Oleppo was almost completely cleansed. Once that was done, conversions could accelerate and Oleppo would become the shining beacon of hope he wanted it to be. He had done well in his crusade against magic, but unless all of Oleppo was converted, there was nothing to stop magic and sorcerers from returning and infesting the garden once again. He tried to convert them through persuasion, but success had been lukewarm, at best. Of late he had been thinking he would need a different approach, something that would jar them out of their complacency, something they could not possibly ignore, something so terrible they would cry out for the Blessed Father’s grace. An idea took root in his mind some time ago, but it frightened him.

How badly did he want to convert Oleppo? It would undoubtedly cost lives, but that didn’t bother him. What bothered him was that he risked something a good deal more valuable than his life. Was he willing to risk his soul?

Vague worry made it difficult for Dagrith to settle down and get comfortable. His house seemed more somber to him, subdued, almost like a child hoping an angry parent would ignore him. He finally drifted into a restless sleep, where he nightmares again plagued him.

He jerked awake and lay there, panting. His old injuries on his chest and left leg pained him.

After a few moments he calmed a bit and rolled out of bed with an exasperated sigh. He got his cane and limped out of his bedroom to prowl the hallways of his manor house. All of his servants slept, which was just as well. Dagrith craved no one's company at this hour.

As he approached the huge den, his feeling of apprehension grew. He paused, staring into the great room at the hall's end a few paces away from him. Lamplight flickered within, but so vast was the room that the few lamps lit at this hour only emphasized the darkness. Standing at the threshold, Dagrith peered into the den, searching every corner, half expecting one of the dancing shadows cast by the lamps to become Baezha.

Dagrith stepped into the room. Something happened, but he could not be sure what it was.

The room seemed to ripple in his vision, like the surface of gelatin. It was only for a fraction of a second, so quick that he wasn't certain he actually saw it. As he looked around, the room seemed perfectly solid. He circulated about the den, but nothing else happened. He took the opportunity to light a few more lamps and banish most of the shadows. Rising from tossing the taper into the fireplace, Dagrith studied at the furnishings. The white columns supporting the ceiling were vertical collages of images of both men and beasts.
